The Details

I began creating relationships with “sunbursts” of horseshoe nails in the 1970’s, first applying them over lacquered slabs of antiqued barnboard, an exercise in studying contrasts between materials textures and shapes.

Since turning to the lathe in the ‘90s, I’ve applied brazed farriers nails to a number of one-of-a-kind works in my ongoing “Horsing Around” series.

This piece, titled “Frontrunner” was crafted in October 2001. it is 22.75” in diameter and 2.25” deep and features turning, radial carving, ebonizing and brazed farriers nails over a figured bigleaf maple medallion turned in a discus shaped profile, all finished in varnish. The deeply undercut bowl, protected by the burst of nails, is roughly half the greater diameter of the piece as a whole.

“Frontrunner” is valued at $1950.00 and part of my personal collection.
