The Details

“Aurora Beau”  is a rocking piece that begs to be held.

 

Turned in April of 2003 of Garry oak, which has a more open grain than maple, I employed the physical properties of the material to create this effect. The grain pattern on the broad rim reminded me of seeing the aurora borealis. To add  sparkling effervescence to my scene, I opened the grain with a stiff brass brush and ground in gold leaf powder to fill the recessed pores; then I inlaid brass “stars”. The central bowl was turned and coarsely sanded. The resulting swirling pattern was then gold leafed, sealed and antiqued. Varnish is applied overall.

 

Obliquely lit, spinning or rocking, the piece is alive with glimmering reflected light.
